Step by Step – Better Balance Programme

Are you unsteady on your feet?

Have you lost confidence in walking outside? 

Do you want to improve your mobility, balance, strength and co-ordination and be able to meet and make new friends in your area?

The Step by Step – Better Balance Programme is a partnership project with Ipswich & East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group to develop our existing Better Balance sessions in Ipswich and East Suffolk, to help raise awareness about preventing falls and fractures and working more closely with health professionals such as GP’s, Consultants, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and other community organisations, to make it easier for people to access specialist ‘Better Balance’ sessions out in the community. New groups may be established in areas where access is limited or there is a demand for this type of activity. These sessions are on-going, so are not limited to 6 or 12 weeks.

The ‘Step by Step’ Better Balance Programme is aimed at people who are having problems with balance or mobility issues, you may have had a fall or are high risk of falling or have lost confidence in walking outside of your home. If you have mobility or balance issues then a Better Balance session will help improve your gait, balance, strength, co-ordination, build up your confidence and enable you to stay independent and active.

Julie Stokes CEO said, ‘If you feel unsteady on your feet or you have been having regular trips and falls, then speak to your GP, Physiotherapist or a health professional and see if you are eligible for a referral into the ActivLives – Step by Step Programme’. The first 4 introductory sessions are FREE and then a minimal charge will be made for each session and includes refreshments.’

Sessions are run by qualified OTAGO fitness instructors and some sessions are supported by trained volunteers. The session also includes time for a coffee and a chat, so you can get to know other people in a similar situation to yourself. The sessions are welcoming and fun and you will get to hear about all the other activities ActivLives provides. The session will include seated and standing activity, band work, information about getting up safely if you do have a fall and you are not injured and general tips about how to avoid trips and slips at home.

We currently have Better Balance sessions across Ipswich and in Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Leiston. So don’t be put off if there isn’t a group near you, we can look at community transport to help get you to the session or if there is enough people in an area, then we might be able to start a new group.
